Got Hunting Ammo

We at Shotem and Caughtem were started to become relieved by signs that ammunition was slowly but surely hitting the shelves and not disappearing in a matter of minutes.  For much of the past year since the Sandy Hook tragedy, ammo of all calibers has been hard to find.  As such many manufacturers began pumping out .223, .45, .22, .308 and .40 and not focusing on hunting ammo which tends to stay on shelves longer.  But as hunting season starts many shelves are not replenishing their hunting ammo stock as fast due to the switch.  Follow the money.

With hunting season in full swing we wanted to remind our members that the days of just hitting the store and grabbing the ammo you need while on your way to the field is not something one should rely on accomplishing.  In some calibers it requires a more refined search to find the caliber and grain combination for your gun.  Also, many of us have our scopes ranged in with a certain grain that may not be readily available causing a need to re-sight in our weapon prior to spoking animals in our hunting area.  Not that making sure our weapons are in working order so that we do not have a Dick Cheney misfire.

We have found that even duck shells are not in the abundance that they once were.  With the recent tragedy at the Naval Yard, ammo shelves are once again being cleaned out in fear of potential action prior to the rumor mill getting everyone in a frenzy.

Let us know how things are panning out in your area in the comment section below and as always come brag with us in the galleries.

Father's Day Gift Idea Day 3

For Day 3 of Father's Day Gift Idea we at Shotem and Caughtem are going after the younger generations for this one.  Should you be starting your summer break from school, 18 or older or know someone who is and have a little extra time we have a great suggestion.  With the recent ammo shortage finding ammo priced right requires a little time to stand in line.  If you have the time we have some ideas on how you might score your Dad a little extra bang this Father's Day.

Large chains that have ammo such as Cabela's, Gander Mountain, Walmart, Bass Pro get their shipments during certain times of the week.  Though they are not sure as to what is coming in on their shipments we do know what has been working in our neck of the woods.  However, there is a twist because they might not get your ammo in on any specific shipment so it might take a couple of tries to get what you are after.

Walmart is getting in shipments every other day and most of the time you can get your hands on what has come in around nine o'clock in the morning.  By lunch it is gone.

Gander Mountain gets their shipments in every Tuesday and you have to be in line Wednesday morning by eight and stand around til they open at nine.  They to are sold out usually in a couple of hours.

Cabelas gets shipments in on Tuesdays and Thursdays and they too are usual out of ammo in a couple of hours.

So should you have the ability during the week to afford a little time to stand in line you might just score that favorite Dad a little box of fun.  As a bonus they come wrapped already so that saves a little cash.

Let us know what has been working in your area in the comment section below.  Any Dad with a gun can never have too much ammo.  It might even allow you and your Dad to spend a little extra quality time at your favorite range to say thanks.

We at ShotemandCaughtem this weekend went around to the several gun and ammunition retail stores around town to see if things had slowed down from the recent rush.  Unfortunately what we found is the days of going and grabbing a couple of boxes of ammo before going on our hunting trips might be over.  It was not long ago when a hunting season approached that we could run out that week, grab the necessary license and ammo, and then head out for our hunt.  After our outing this weekend further planning is definitely going to be needed.  With Spring Turkey season just around the corner, and pheasant and quail season ending in many parts of the country we thought we would look for the ammunition we might need.  However, what we found was that much of the ammo needed for a successful hunt is non existent on the shelves.  As a matter of fact one Walmart we went to only had a couple of boxes of 30-06, 270, 300 win, 7mm and a couple of 100 boxes of 20g and 12g target loads.  No other ammo was available.  This seemed to be the repeating pattern over many of the retailers we visited.  Only the most expensive ammo for the more unique calibers was left on the shelves.  In fact the 12g shells we need for our turkey hunts are gone.  We have decided to begin randomly visiting stores throughout the week to acquire the three or four boxes we need as a group to go on our turkey hunt.   Our season starts on April 10th here in Kansas.  We felt that our members needed to know that the recent rush on ammunition has not been limited to some calibers but all calibers.  We talked to many people across the country and they seem to have similar problems.  The need to grab a box or two of your necessary hunting ammo when you see it should be at the top of your priority list, even if the season is not here yet.  In fact we grabbed a couple of boxes of 30-06 and 7mm for deer season and a couple 100rd boxes of 20g and 12g 7 1/2 for dove season just in case the problem persists.  As different spring and summer hunting seasons begin to get close, many would be hunters will find their ammo of choice is unavailable.  This might also be the case this fall and winter.  So start planning for your favorite hunting seasons now so you can post your photos to Shotem and Caughtem.  As always let us know how things are in your neck of the woods.  You might even meet some people here in the Gear section that can help you out getting the things you need, so that they might get the things they need!
